How Many Calories Are There In Bubble Tea?

There’s no denying that bubble tea can be an indulgent treat. However, as there are so many variations, it can be tricky to know how many calories you’re consuming when you drink it.

That said, the answer to this question largely depends on the type of bubble tea in question among other factors. For instance, while 490 ml of brown sugar milk bubble tea contains around 270 calories, fruit bubble tea contains approximately 220 calories, though this can differ from store to store.

As such, the type of bubble tea, alongside various other factors can impact the calorie content of your bubble tea.

How To Order Bubble Tea Whilst Being Calorie Conscious

If you’re tracking your calories, or are simply on a diet, you will need to be mindful of:

  1. Sweeteners
  2. The size of the drink
  3. Sugary toppings
  4. The type of bubble tea you order

How many calories bubble tea contains depends on the type of bubble tea in question among other factors.

1. Sweeteners

The first factor you will need to be aware of when ordering bubble tea whilst being calorie conscious is sweeteners.

Generally speaking, bubble tea is sweetened with sugar syrups. That said, at many bubble tea stores you can choose how sweet your beverage is, which can significantly impact how many calories your bubble tea beverage contains.

At Bubblebase, we have a sweetness level for our milk teas, in store and on our app, that allows you to pick the perfect sweetness level for you.

This gives you the option to choose from 100% sugar (regular), 75% sugar, 50% sugar or 25% sugar, giving you an indication of how much sugar you can cut back on if you’re trying to be conscious of your calorie intake.

As such, you can make your milk tea as indulgent or as healthy as you like.

2. The Size Of The Drink

Secondly, you will also need to factor in the size of the bubble tea drink that you order.

Typically speaking, ‘500ml is the standard size’ of bubble tea and 700ml is a large. That said, regardless of which bubble tea you opt for, larger drinks will naturally contain more calories than smaller drinks.

Bubble tea stores now offer a wide variety of flavors, some of which are incredibly luxurious and contain many calories. Bearing this in mind, a larger size drink can quickly equate to hundreds more calories if you're not wary.

So while you might be tempted by a bigger size, if you're on a diet or being conscious about the number of calories that you're eating, be sure to size down when it comes to ordering your bubble tea.

3. Sugary Toppings

You will also need to be aware of sugary toppings when ordering your bubble tea.

From popping bubbles to tapioca pearls, fruit jelly to custard jelly, there are a variety of different toppings to choose from when you order your bubble tea.

That said, when it comes to adding various toppings to your bubble tea, this is when the calorie content of your drink can begin to creep up without you necessarily noticing.

In fact, a recent study claims that ‘jelly was found to have about 212 Calories and 12 grams of sugar in total’, emphasising how calorific you can choose to make your bubble tea with certain toppings.

Whilst adding sugary toppings is okay for an indulgent treat every now and then, it’s definitely something to be mindful of if you’re trying to watch the number of calories that you’re consuming.

4. The Type Of Bubble Tea You Order

Lastly you will need to be mindful of the type of bubble tea that you order.

This predominantly comes down to the fact that different teas contain different calorie contents. For instance, fruit tea generally contains fewer calories than milk tea as it is made with juice.

As such, if you're hoping to order a bubble tea with less calories, then this is a good place to start. That said, if you are unsure on what type of bubble tea you should order, then don't be afraid to ask a member of staff to see what they would recommend.

Alternatively, you can browse a menu beforehand so that you are prepared when you come to order.
