What Is Bubble Tea Made From?

Traditional Bubble Tea is made from Assam tea and frothy milk, paired with crushed ice and caramelized tapioca pearls. Assam tea can be replaced with jasmine green tea, and alternative milks can be used instead of cow’s milk (oat, soya, almond, coconut).

Although this is the Classic Bubble Tea that was invented in the 1980’s, new bubbles, jellies, powders, fruit juices, flavoured syrups and milks mean that the drink can look much different now. In fact, some of the most popular bubble teas are almost unrecognisable from the caramelized tapioca milk drink that gave bubble tea its name

Perhaps the biggest difference is the introduction of Fruit Tea. These are made from fruit and fruit juices and blended with ice, with popping-bubbles or jellies often added to the bottom. Think mango fruit tea with passion fruit bubbles, or dragon fruit tea with strawberry jelly at the bottom - a delicious, fruity treat of your choice.

Another popular spin on bubble tea is Bubble Coffee. This can be set up like the classic Assam milk tea (milk, crushed ice, caramelised tapioca pearls) but with coffee instead of jasmine green or black Assam tea.

Like all bubble tea, this can be customised with new bubbles, powders and syrups to make a delicious caffeinated drink. Our personal favourite is the Chocolate Bubble Coffee!

You can even get a Yuangyang Tea Coffee, a popular drink in Hong Kong which is what it sounds like —  coffee and tea in one drink. Both of these can be made hot.

Matcha Bubble Tea is another well-loved alternative to the classic milk tea. It is made from pure matcha tea or powder and mixed with a milk of your choice to create a delicious drink with the signature vibrant green colour.

Much like the classic milk tea, the Matcha Tea goes great with caramelized tapioca pearls; or you can pair it with grass jelly if you want to enhance its “earthy” flavour.
